IT was factory filled with 75W-90 But ford has since updated to use 75W-145 for in service fluid changes on the rear ends. The other manufactures that use the Dana 80 (mainly mopar) still spec the 75W-90 in their rear ends.

Agree 100% on synthetics for the diff after gear break-in and have been running syn Mobil-1 for years in all my vehicles. As for diff heat buildup, I'm a firm believer of adding a quality finned cast aluminum cover. Besides adding about 25% more oil capacity and having a convenient drain plug, they do a super job of dissipating heat.

The harder way, would involve pulling both axleshafts, the driveshaft, and then the differential, because the "cover" is your axle beam. I vote for the first one.
