So basically the evening when I did the update everything worked fine, but when I came home from work next day and wanted to play music the device kept quiet. Normally a restart of the device worked on that but after restarting the HomePods (Stereo Pair) instead of properly restarting the device went into the mentioned "flashing volume icons" mode.
