The 1301 and is lighter but feels more like a plastic gun. It shoots well and fast, although not noticeably faster unless you are pushing it to the max. The M4 feels more solid and feels better made. Head to head for a long term gun I would take the M4. The M4 feels stronger and robust.

Ha! The LE tactical version of the 1301 popped up on my LGS's website this morning. They had one each of the pistol grip and standard stocks. I hadn't seen that version pistol grip before and would have liked to handle it, but I didn't want to take a chance on snooze and lose, so I just bought the standard stock online and will go pick it up later today.

I don't have as much time behind the 1301 as the M4 but so far both have been reliable for me. I'm tempted to say the M4 might have the edge over the 1301 since it's been well regarded by military users. One thing that can't be argued is that the 1301 handles much better. The Benelli M4 is physically a better built gun, I have simply never held a better built shotgun than a Benelli M4. Significantly cheaper - ~$1200 for a 1301 LE vs ~$1800+ for an M4. Has the Beretta name behind it and a pretty good track record in normal use and competitions.

The biggest differences are that the Beretta 1301 is lighter, Benelli M4 has a pistol grip option, and the systems used to cycle the action.
