BC, Canada. I'm looking for the best powder choice for the 45-70 with 400-405 grain bullets. Will be loading in the 35-40000 PSI range. The 2 that appear the most promising are H322 and H4198 or IMR4198. I had read someplace that one was better for the heavy bullets and the other was better for lighter - 300gr.
.45-70 Government (Trapdoor Rifles) (Hodgdon Data) reloading data with 94 loads. Using bullets from Cast LFP, Sierra HP. Powders include Hodgdon, IMRI love RL7 for all the same reason's Starrbow mentioned, but H4198 is a real good one as well. H322 has a very good following and is very accurate. I really haven't found a bad powder in my 45-70 yet.. Good thing is everything that works in the 45-70, will work excellent with the 444 Marlin you'll eventually have to have! HA! Good luck.

Triple Seven pellets under a sabot with a 250 gr. XTP, and I can regulate the .45-70 to hit the same POI as the Huntsman. That cuts out a little second guessing.If you decide to shoot up the surplus powder in your 45-70, I'd start less than 20 grains using the cereal filler and see how things go. Might want to use a magnum rifle primer to ignite the hard to start powder if things work out but have unburnt powder in the bore. According burn rate charts, some have Accurate 1680 closer to the 4227s than the 4198s, while others have it closer to the 4198s than the 4227s. There is no reason why it wouldn't produce impressive velocities in the 45-70 ...

Heck, I even looked in my Hodgdon manual and could find no loadings using H110 for the 45-70. The .454 Casull had a load of 28.5 gr of H110 for a 300 gr JFP bullet, but showing 44.2K of pressure. The .475 Linebaugh had a loading of 27.0 gr for a 385 gr cast LRNFP at 45.3K pressure. A 420 gr cast LRNFP had 25.0 gr with 36.7K pressure.

When I had a 45-70, the recommended powder was 4198. 35gr gave me 1500fps with 405 LFN. The only handgun powder listed in loaddata.com was 2400 in an 1873 Trapdoor. I use Unique in my 45 Colt handloads. A lot of people post on the internet using Unique for this round, but I wouldn't. If it was safe, the data would be in the manuals.

Powders burn best within their own particular pressure range.
