I check to make sure the oil is somewhere on the stick. If it is I ride the bike to fully warm it up and let it run on the side stand a minute or two.

I am using about a 2/3 quart of oil over a period of about 3000 miles. I run Mobil 1 VT 20/50. I do not wind out the engine do not ride real hard, no stop and go type stuff.
