Within my faith, family and culture it is very uncommon to throw baby showers or buy presents before birth. Expectant couples do not make an announcement until 3 months in. We don't say congratulations, instead saying "at a good time." Logic being that so much can go wrong during pregnancy and having gifts meant for the baby makes it more painful.
