I cut a sheet of ¼" plywood down to the dimensions of the mantel, then cut out notches around the brackets with my jigsaw. Another piece of ¼" plywood went on top, completely hiding the bracket. This extra ½" on top of the mantel will also make it look more proportional when the fireplace trim is installed underneath.
