Familiars in Pathfinder aren’t the combat pets that they could be in 3.5, but they are certainly no less useful. Ultimate Campaign includes some wonderful content about how to handle pets in your game. Reading it isn’t essential, but it may improve your play experience when pets are involved. I think my favourite Familiar flavour for Alchemists is the mini-homunculus, a tiny little fleshwarp type thing, built out of your own blood. I think there's a lot of fun ways to build in the abilities as well, mine being to make them a Frankenstien's Monster type deal, and you have essentially a bunch of spare parts on hand to trade out for wings, gills, burrow speeds, magical batteries ...
