The way crystal countdown works is that each kill will reduce the total EXP needed to level a random W1 to W3 skill up to a % cap (depending on talent level). This reduction is semi-permanent, you'll keep whatever % you'd got if you swapped talents, but it resets to 0 once you'd leveled that particular skill.

If you don't have idleon efficiency I recommend getting it because it can tell you with a glance which skills are capped from crystal countdown. Very helpful. And if you're just going for crystals you don't need to be on an exp efficient map or anything.
