You can probably make a great Sword and Board Ranger for your Melee build if you want to. Heavy Crossbow would require Corssbow Expert to take the most of, so you should try a Longbow instead. I assume a Sharpshooter with a Longbow and Archery Fighting style, With the teleportation magic from Horizon Walker would be an amazing build.On top of that, you can comfortably use Favored Foe adjacent Planar Warrior and saves a spell slot. For me, the value of Horizon Walker comes from the extra spells of Misty Step, Haste, and Banishment. These are just fantastic spells for a Ranger to have. Ethereal Step is a bit mediocre, but only because it's 1 use per short rest.

There's a few pros and cons to going this route instead of the Horizon Walker: Pro #1) You avoid taking 3 levels of Horizon Walker and get more Slayer class features; Pro #2) You can select the Dimensional Agility feats sooner and get access to Dimensional Dervish at level 11, which is a whole 2 levels earlier than my original build;Alternatively a ranged ranger as per the usual builds is fairly self explanatory. You could go a bit more interesting perhaps though to capitalize on the Close-range nature of the Horizon walker. Normal Longbow Ranger, Sharpshooter and Archery is fairly self-explanatory. Having played a horizon walker and an echo knight, I'll say right off the bat this will be a difficult build to utilise all the skills due to bonus actions; the core damage feature for horizon walkers utilises your bonus action every turn to do extra force damage, and the Echo Knight has to use a bonus action to create their duplicate.

The basic idea for the character is melee ranger who hits and runs via teleportation/better mobility and is stealthy tracker type. Dueling fighting style, with a shield.
