P229's never had a 1-letter prefix like the rest of the classic SIGs (neither did the P239). P229's were always an "A" and another letter (i.e. AA, AB, AM, etc...) with AM being the last German prefix used. The US made frames originally had a "U" at the end of the 'A and another letter' (i.e. AJU, AKU, etc...), with the U designating US made.

The P229 was originally designed for the .40 S&W cartridge, and later versions were slightly redesigned to better fit the 9mm Luger. Older ones will have a different magazine well, and use slightly different magazines. Thus they are designated P229 versus P229-1.
