Dregs has goop as others have said. To enter the dregs, you need to drag a human to the circle (truncheon and bindings), and then kill them (sacrifice them essentially). This will open the gate. I don't think I've used a skinning knife on one using any of my higher-tier tools, but back when I was doing it with steel, I'd only get a skull every third or fourth skeleton. 2.
Torch takes up one of your hands. The wisp does not, allowing you to use 2 handed weapons or a weapon and a shield. It isn't as good as a torch, but that is the point of sorcery. It isn't supposed to be as good as normal. That is why the summoned demons eventually attack you or disappear.
