I created the following search, which works under my smaller-Staging Splunk-Enterprise, but fails out when I attempt it in my larger-Production Splunk-Enterprise:

Since the original answer in 2011, we now have the fieldsummary command, so you can list the fields from a search: yoursearchhere | fieldsummary.
